Web hosting firms Names.co.uk and Simplyhosting.com have apologised to customers after a power cut at their UK data centre caused dozens of websites to go offline today.
The company’s back-up power systems also failed to work properly, they admitted.
The power outage affected customers the length and breadth of the UK – and beyond – with many taking to social media to vent their anger at the situation and what the believed to be a lack of information from the company. Many customers were left frustrated after neither Names.co.uk or Simplyhosting were able to give an ETA on when services would be back on-line.
The companies stated that power was returned by 10.30am. However, despite this claim, many customers’ sites were still not back on-line.
Names.co.uk said: “From 10.30am this morning power was re-established and our staff began the process of re-setting individual equipment that required attention.
“We are of course monitoring the situation carefully to ensure that services remain stable.
“Our Operations team will be investigating fully to determine cause of the issue. We will also establish as a priority why our backup power facilities did not operate as expected.
“Once again, we are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused.”
Considering today’s issues, here at Pitched and IT-OK we are reviewing our procedures to see how our customers can be better mitigated from similar such incidents in the future.
