Dipping my toes in the social water

Social Networks and Blogs

Well, the new website is up and running, social networks such as twitter and facebook pages are in place and now we embark on our blogging adventure, but I can’t help but wonder what’s the point of all this?

As a company primarily involved in developing websites and online business strategy, increasingly (I would go so far as to say in every development meeting) we get requests from our clients about need for blogs and social presence.
“I need a blog setting up.”
or
“I’ve got a facebook page can we put a link on the website to it?”
being familiar opening points of discussion.

The answer of course to all of these questions is yes, and thankfully with the many API’s and Plugin components available to us this can be integrated with minimal fuss, but the question still exists, what’s the aim?

This is a question I propose to investigate through the on-going development of our own blog and growth through social media. From the outset I can state the obvious.

  1. To generate business
  2. To generate interest in our company
  3. To network and better communicate with our customers.

However therein lies the crux of the issue from the start, it’s not simply enough to have vehicles in place it’s in the application of the tools to give it any chance for success.

As a creative person I spend more of my time on the net nowadays reading creative blogs than I do anything else, and why…? simple, because I share a passion for it and because I gain inspiration from other creative people the world over. In these points is what excites me the most as I begin to first write my own blog. The fact that I can connect with people who share similar aspirations, hopefully share some of my own creative inspiration and processes further down the line, and in turn, take steps to achieving goals 1 to 3 on the list!

It is only by dipping my toes into the social water that I can really understand what there is to gain from all the media hype surrounding the scene. So comes my first hope and indeed assumption on this project, that you want to know too and follow me as I find out. My promise, that I will share my journey, pros and cons, and try to throw in a good measure of fun on the way, after all a blog is a personal thing right?

and so my social journey begins….
